Focus Projects

2025 ASIRA

ASIRA is developing a next-generation industrial robotic arm that will be more adaptable and energy-efficient than current models. The goal is to create a robot that can be used for a variety of tasks, including delicate assembly and rapid pick-and-place operations. The robot will use artificial intelligence to optimize its performance and to configure itself to different tasks.

2024 RAPTURE

Additive Manufacturing, particularly Laser Powder Bed Fusion, is a rapidly growing technology applicable across various industries, enabling the production of intricately designed parts unattainable through other methods. RAPTURE, a Focus Project at ETH Zurich in the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering (D-MAVT), seeks to enhance performance by introducing multi-material capability, allowing for the use of multiple materials in a single component. The project also introduces a newly developed powder deposition method to become the fastest and most powder-conserving system to date.

Enthusiastic students in RAPTURE engage in a hands-on approach within a small team during their final academic year, overseeing all aspects of product development with support from academic supervisors and industry professionals. Project RAPTURE is part of the Academic Space Initiative Switzerland (ARIS), uniting students from Swiss universities in space exploration. It builds upon the success of the 2022-2023 Focus Project external page PROMETHEUS, which developed a test bed for additively manufactured liquid-fueled rocket engines.
