GPU-accelerated Meshfree Cutting Simulation

Metal cutting (i.e., machining) is the most prevalent manufacturing operation, where a workpiece is brought into the desired shape by removing its undesired material. The majority of industry demands and requirements for this process, such as optimization of chip removal and tool development, can only be achieved through the help of efficient simulations. Due to the complex multi-physics and thermo-mechanically coupled nature of metal cutting, providing fast and accurate predictions of the associated process variables remains a challenging task. In this project, a highly efficient chip formation simulation code based on Lagrangian particle methods is developed. The computer program is designed and implemented in such a way that it can be run entirely on Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) in order to reduce the calculation times by exploiting the computational power as much as possible.
